1. Many women take off their rings when washing the dishes. With children underfoot it might be a good idea to wear a thin chain (or keep one close by) to put your rings on. Don't keep your rings on the bathroom sink when you're in the shower because little fingers have a habit of bumping them down the drain - or worse, flushing them down the toilet!
If something small and precious does go down the bathroom drain, stop running water in the bathroom. If you're unsure about how to retrieve your jewelry, call your local Mr. Rooter plumber. We can do a video inspection and help find whatever might have slid down the drain.
2. During the hotter months, your water heater does not need to work as hard as normal. By turning down your water heater you can save water, energy, and of course a little bit of green on your bill.
3. When your kids are home during the summer months, that means your toilet is being used more than normal - especially if your kids bring over friends. The smaller your children, the more trips they will probably need to make. You might be thinking, so what? Keep your plunger handy! There's nothing worse than coming into your bathroom to find a clog waiting, and no plunger to help you push past it.
Just to be safe, make sure to keep anything that's small and flushable out of sight. We've already talked about jewelry, but small hand soaps, cotton balls, or random trinkets that the kids might carry in and forget to carry back out. If your children are small enough to want to flush anything and everything (we've heard stories about cell phones!), you might consider a toilet lock.
4. Your washing machine is likely to get a good workout during the summer months. Kids play hard. Between grass stains, swimsuits, dirt, and sand, your washer is going to get a lot of use. To minimize the amount of times you have to do your laundry this summer be sure to use a stain treatment as soon as possible. You can also use a cold temperature detergent so that you don't need to use hot water to help save on your bill.
These are just a few small home care tips to help cooling your summer bill. Remember, your professional Mr. Rooter plumber is just a phone call (or email) away.
